PA1-ENVIROMENT

PA1 – MY ENVIROMENT

The place I chose to write about is the room I am staying in for the duration of the course. This room is located in a student residence, where all rooms are very similar. More specifically I will focus on what I can see and percieve from one of its corners. When I sit and observe, I quickly realise I am surounded by rectangular and cubed elements. The room itself, is a cube, due to its high cieling the walls are, or at least seem to be equilateral squares. There are two windows, one at each side of a door, that leads to a very small terrace, from where a lot of the light the room receives comes from.  The floor, quite shiny, lets me see the reflection of the elements in the room such as a small auxiliar squared table, and a bigger table with some shelves on top. The lamp is long, cylindrical, horizontaly placed, and hangs from the cieling.

WHY DID YOU CHOSE THIS SPACE?

The amount of elements I could obseve, talk about and link with emotions was all the encouragement I needed to chose my room as the space I wanted to describe.

WHAT MAKES YOU CONFORTABLE?

As the text in the previous excercise suggested, to many people. arquitecture is a covering fabric, a cloth, that envelops a person. The combination of elements in this room envelop me into a feeling of security belonging, and ownership of the space, which makes me very comfortable. The fact that the room is cube shaped, and that, looking out the window I can see other identical rooms, tells me there is a space for everyone in this student residence, and this cube I am in, is my little section of it. This feeling of belonging combined with the simple and spaceous distribution of furniture what arouses comfort in me.

IS THERE SOME DISRUPTIVE ELEMENT?

This is one of the most peaceful places I could find in my daily routine. When I sit in this corner and observe, There is no element I find disruptive, with one minuscule exception. If I had to point out something that breaks the composition of it all, I would have to say There are unmatching colour schemes, which can sabotage the whole perception of the room. While the furniture and the window and door frames are dark blue, there are other elements like the chair and the paintjob in the wall, that follow a green scheme. Many people would say this uncoordination of colour is disruptive.

DO YOU THINK YOUD FEEL THE SAME WAY IN ANOTHER SPACE RIGHT NOW?

As I have mentioned before, this space is where I will stay for the duration of the course making this my home for the time being. There are very few places I can call home and actually feel home. I would have this confort and sense of belonging back at my childhood home, but then again, who wouldnt?

HOW DO THE CONDITIONS OF THIS PLACE INFLUENCE ITS OCCUPANTS?

Given that this is a residential space, its conditions are crucial to the occupant as they will be using this space on a daily basis, and would without a doubt influence his/her feelings. The uniformity and cleanness this cubic room conveys would be totally sabotaged by, say, a scrap in the wall´s paint, a broken and badly placed tile on the floor, or leaks in the ceiling that form water puddles on the floor. These poor conditions undermine the confort the occupant could have felt in a space like this.

PETER ZUMTHERS TEXT ABOUT ATHMOSPHERES

Zumthers text talks about memories and every little detail that makes those moments memorable. He highlights the importance of arquitecture by describing it as a cloth, enveloping the moment, and defining how a person will remember it due to the effect arquitecture, form and colour have on human emotions.

The way arquitectural ideas were linked to sensations and athmospheres aided me while writing my evaluation of my own enviroment.
